Thermoplastic and thermoset composites

Even with the same fiber, matrix properties change storage, forming and reprocessing. Material selection should consider manufacturing and end-of-life handling alongside strength.

1. The matrix behaves differently

Thermoset matrices form a crosslinked structure during cure and cannot readily be softened and reshaped like thermoplastics by reheating. Thermoplastics soften within an appropriate temperature range and retain shape on cooling. Reinforced-sheet reforming also depends on fiber orientation and part structure.

2. Separate prepreg storage from finished laminates

Typical uncured thermoset prepregs require control of storage life and room-temperature working time. CARO Fabric Prepreg is polymerized during manufacture, so storage does not require managing cure advancement in an uncured matrix.

This does not imply unlimited life or performance in every environment. Temperature, moisture, UV and contamination still require quality control. A cured thermoset laminate does not have the same cure-related expiry as an uncured prepreg.

3. Manufacturing and supply comparison

TopicTypical thermoset compositesCARO thermoplastic composites
Storage and handlingControl uncured-prepreg storage life and out lifePolymerized CARO prepreg reduces cure-related expiry and cold-storage management
Subsequent formingManage cure reactions and conditionsHeat, consolidate/form and cool
Process timeIncludes matrix-specific cure; fast-cure processes also existCan omit downstream cure waiting; heating, transfer and cooling still take time
Repeatable productionAutomation adapted to materials, molds and cure methodConnect preheating, press/transfer automation and continuous CCM consolidation
Thick layupsManage cure exotherm and heat transferNo cure exotherm during consolidation of polymerized feedstock; manage through-thickness heating, cooling and consolidation
Reforming and recyclingCrosslinked matrix cannot simply be reheated and reshaped; other recycling routes can be assessedAssess reforming/reprocessing routes according to constituents, contamination and collection systems

4. CARO separates polymerization and subsequent forming

Prepreg manufacture: liquid-resin impregnation → polymerization → polymerized Fabric Prepreg

Subsequent forming: material/layup preparation → preheating → heated consolidation/forming → cooling

Elium® materials undergo polymerization in their initial manufacture. Forming without a cure reaction refers here to subsequent consolidation of CARO’s polymerized prepreg. This connects CCM laminate manufacture with customized press forming.

5. Which material suits the product?

Compare loads, stiffness, service temperature/environment, geometry, production volume, available equipment and recycling routes. A thermoplastic matrix alone does not guarantee better strength, weathering or cost. Define requirements and verify material and prototype performance.
